How a Timely Grant Helped Sunnybank Junior Rugby Stay Covered

Sunnybank Junior Rugby applied for grant funding to enable the purchase of a heavy-duty marquee for our members. The club didn’t have enough weather protection for players and volunteers. Ironically, the funding was issued ahead of the March Ex-tropical Cyclone Alfred and therefore allowed us to order and receive the marquee the week of the cyclone, where it was safely stored until more agreeable weather!

The marquee purchased is large enough to accommodate junior teams and their management for away games, and also for school galas hosted at Sunnybank Rugby. Due to the delay of season over April Holiday period, and countless public holidays, the marquee has been loaned internally to our senior club, as they await their new marquee. This has been hugely beneficial to their Queensland Premier Rugby Season to date – as there hasn’t been a dry Saturday yet. We are hopeful that the better weather stabilizes soon, and the marquee can be used to protect from sun, rather than rain!

Attached image of the marquee in use during our first home game of the season, where we had sun, rain, wind, and rainbows all within 80 mins. The marquee was captured on STAN sport as part of broadcast, sheltering our senior volunteer coaches through our first win of the season. As and when our junior fixtures are played, we will then use the marquee to shelter our players on their match days.

Sunnybank Junior Rugby Club is grateful for the ongoing support of Cllr Huang and the Brisbane City Council Lord Mayor’s Community Fund.
